How the calculation works

Size is estimated by the fixture method: the volume of water your sinks, dishwashers and kettles can drain at once determines the flow the interceptor must handle without letting grease through.

Pump-out frequency applies the 25% rule: your activity volume (meals per day, kitchen type) gives an estimated daily grease output, and your trap’s capacity determines how long it takes to reach a quarter of capacity — the threshold for a pump-out.

Frequently asked questions

What is the 25% rule?

A widely used industry rule of thumb: a grease interceptor should be pumped out when the grease layer (on top) and the solids (at the bottom) together reach about 25% of its liquid capacity. Beyond that, separation efficiency drops and grease escapes into your lines.

Is the calculator result guaranteed?

No — it is a starting estimate based on average factors. Final sizing depends on your actual installation and your municipality’s requirements. Use the result to discuss with a professional, not to buy equipment.

My trap is smaller than the recommendation. Is that a problem?

An undersized trap saturates fast and lets grease through: more frequent blockages, odours and compliance risk. Two options: increase pump-out frequency, or replace it with a properly sized trap — often cheaper over the medium term.
