Tree Roots in Your Sewer Line: Catch Them Before the Break
A sewer line is a source of water and nutrients — exactly what a tree root is looking for. One imperfect joint is all it takes to get in, grow, and turn your line into a debris filter.
How roots get in (and why older lines are at risk)
Older lines — vitrified clay, concrete, cast iron — are assembled in sections, with a joint at every connection. Over the decades those joints shift, dry out or crack. A root doesn’t need a visible breach: a hairline crack seeping a little moisture is enough to attract it.
Once inside, the root branches out like hair. At first it blocks nothing — it catches. Grease, wipes, paper: everything that passes snags on it, until the blockage is complete. As it thickens, it also pressures the pipe until it cracks or crushes it.
Modern PVC lines, with tight flexible joints, are far less vulnerable — but not invincible, especially over poorly compacted backfill.
Warning signs, from subtle to urgent
- Recurring slow drains on the main line — not one sink, but the whole building draining poorly.
- Gurgling in floor drains or toilets when other fixtures drain.
- Seasonal blockages — a blockage that returns every spring or early summer matches the root growth push.
- Repeated backups at the same spot — the alarm bell. If the same section backs up twice, the cause is structural, not bad luck.
Diagnosis: see the root, don’t guess it
Treating a root blockage without locating it means paying twice. A camera inspection lets you:
- locate the intrusion to the metre (and its depth), so any dig happens in the right place;
- assess the extent — a few strands cut in one visit, or a root mass that signals a destroyed joint;
- document the line’s condition before/after, for your insurance file, a claim, or a building sale.
The options, least to most invasive
- Mechanical root cutting (cutting head on an auger). Fast and effective — but it’s a treatment, not a cure: the root regrows through the same joint.
- High-pressure jetting, to fully clean the section after cutting and restore the full diameter.
- Pipe lining (CIPP): a structural liner seals the entry joint from the inside, without excavation. Durable, as long as the pipe hasn’t collapsed.
- Excavation and replacement of the section — the last resort, when the pipe is crushed or sagging.
The right choice depends on the line’s actual condition, not on a package deal — which is exactly what the camera report is for.
Preventing the repeat
A known at-risk line — older building, mature trees, a first root episode — deserves scheduled inspections rather than one emergency a year. That’s the kind of follow-up a maintenance contract automates: preventive cutting in spring, documented inspection, and zero backups in peak season.
